You've seen him in movies, read about him in books, and have probably even dressed as him on Halloween. Who is it? Why, it's Dracula - the blood-sucking, debonair demon. Instead of eating his cereal, you can now buy his house.

The real-life man who inspired the myth, Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes, is one of Romania's heroes. His Castle, which was a museum in the 1980s, recently went up for sale on the market. Bran Castle is built on 20 acres on a mountaintop in Brasov. It's recently gained fame for being the subject of a Ghost Hunters (SciFi series) investigation. Don't worry; it's not haunted, but it is expensive.

In order to take a bite out of true Romanian history and own Bran Castle, you'd have to drop an astounding $140-million US. It's not one of these 19th century homes that claim to be castles. Vlad had Bran Castle constructed in the 14th century to fend off invading Turks.

The castle then became home to Queen Marie, and it is still decorated with many artifacts from her time. It's a true-to-life fortress, completely refurbished and modernized for today's homeowner. It's the only estate on the world's most expensive list to also serve as a national monument.

The price of the home doesn't include the classy and lavish amenities that you'd find with, say, a Trump home. What you're paying for with Bran Castle is mostly nostalgia. The owner not only purchases the castle, but the entire mountain on which it sits. There are many secret passageways, a spooky landing that drops hundreds of feet straight down to a now dry riverbed (famous from Bram Stoker's Dracula), and enough living space for a hundred people.

There are no more dungeons or cold concrete floors in the living space. To the contrary, the castle is completely suitable for living. It has an impressive 57 large rooms throughout its interior, 17 of which are spacious bedrooms. The entire castle is decorated with Old World antiques and furniture.

As one of the biggest drawbacks to this caste, however, there are currently half a million tourists who make the trip to Romania to visit Vlad's castle every year. Needless to say, the castle owner would receive his or her fair share of knocks on the door.

The beautiful hardwood floors throughout the castle seem to go on forever, and the wood-beam ceilings add a humble, country feel to the gargantuan space. The castle contains no central heating unit, so it is known to get a bit cold. As far as outdoor luxuries like swimming pools, tennis courts, and guests homes go, Bran Castle is a standalone purchase. It's a historic castle, not a modern mansion with the many bells and whistles.
