World's Most Exclusive Hotels - Kahala Mandarin, Honolulu
26 November 2009
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has set up shop in some of the world's finest locations. Their name is now synonymous with luxury, and nearly every one of their lavish resorts earns high acclaim and is visited by millions of tourists every year. Mandarin Oriental Hotels can be found in Bangkok, London, Hong Kong, New York, Boston, Miami, and even in Hawaii - via the group's Kahala, Honolulu location.
Kahala makes a wonderful setting for the type of luxury resort Mandarin brings. This small stretch of beachfront island is among the most popular of the Hawaiian chain, and the small neighborhood that plays host to the hotel is also host to lavish homes averaging $3 million a piece.
Before the Mandarin Oriental moved in, the hotel was the Hilton - still an extremely popular name in its own right. Mandarin moved in and added an additional 10,000 square feet of space and made some impressive upgrades, transforming a luxurious hotel into a world-class island resort.
The impressive Kahala is virtually the only thing you notice on the shoreline. With its two main towers, standing tall and wide, along with various facilities, villas, a lagoon and restaurants, the Kahala Mandarin is like the centerpiece of one of Hawaii's most upscale destinations.
As the hotel describes itself, Kahala offers sheer opulence, and with service that is truly second to none, the staff works to ensure that everyone staying there is treated like royalty.
Of course, the sheer size of the Kahala Mandarin suggests that it houses a lot of travelers. Although the hotel is definitely upscale, you don't necessarily have to be wealthy to stay in a nice room. All told, the Mandarin has 306 rooms that could be classified as “regular.” However, if you do want a world-class suite, Kahala offers up 32 impressive and spacious rooms.
Every room in the hotel has state-of-the-art amenities, and every window in the impressive tower will offer up a one-of-a-kind view of either the ocean or the rich, green main island.
The hotel's spa facilities have also become quite popular over the years. For the spa-frequenting types, Kahala offers 10 spa suites, each with its own personal relaxation area, private shower and bath, and personal treatments that vary from basic massage to special and rare treatments. The spa is a nice compliment to the many activities offered at the resort.
Of course, on an island, there's always the water option, Kahala offers scuba diving, dolphin tours in the lagoon, surfing, and many more water activities. There's also cycling and other sporting activities at the resort.
The Kahala Mandarin also offers up a wide selection of fine dining. The hotel's signature restaurant is Hoku's, and its award-winning cuisine alone is enough to draw many people to the island. Other options include the Plumeria Beach House, Seaside Grille, Tokyo-Tokyo, and The Veranda. Of course, there's always the option to eat alone in your rooms or on the beach.
The large resort is one of the finest in Hawaii and offers a little bit of something for everyone, no matter what the vacation budget.
