Top Vegas Shows - Wayne Brady: Making It Up!

Described once as the “friendliest black man on the planet,” comic extraordinaire Wayne Brady has been on a meteoric rise to stardom for over a decade. Even still, the talented improvisation master remains underrated in the mainstream, by and large, and even with two hit TV shows to his credit, Mr. Brady’s Vegas show, Making it UP, doesn’t get its deserved credit.
Wayne Brady was a fixture on America’s version of Whose Line is it Anyway, co-starring Drew Carey. He’s also the host of the daytime game show Let’s Make a Deal, and had an unforgettable performance on the second season of the Dave Chappelle Show. This has prepared Wayne for the big stage of Vegas, and he hasn’t disappointed yet.
It seems like a shame that Wayne Brady: Making it Up isn’t the hottest show on The Strip, but there is a good reason for this: unlike many Las Vegas shows, Brady’s isn’t ongoing. This means show goers need to keep up to date with show times, and with hundreds of entertainment options in Sin City, that’s not always easy to do.
Wayne Brady: Making it Up was last playing at the beautiful Venetian Hotel. Some shows can only dream of moving up to a venue like that, and it’s surely an improvement over the smaller, old-style rooms where he used to host other comedy shows. A good ticket is going to cost around $98, with the “cheap seats” coming in at $75.
For the show itself, the material is going to be as sporadic as the comedian hosting it. You could hear vivid detail about Thursday’s show and how Wayne’s improv with a blonde-haired elderly lady on a stool had everyone in stitches. However, by the time you show up for Sunday’s show, you might see something 180-degrees removed from that.
That’s the best part about Wayne Brady: Making it Up. The comic’s spontaneity and free-flowing spirit enables him to offer something entirely different every show. In fact, the only one thing that remains relatively the same is the singing portion of his show. And with Wayne, there’s no guarantee he will even sing. It could be all comedy.
It’s all based on the comic’s mood and the mood of the audience. Brady definitely respects the classic Vegas showmanship; you can see that from start to finish. And with his partner—the hilarious Jonathan Magnum—to assist him, Wayne is bound to get sidetracked at least once or twice throughout the show.
To mix it up some and add some big production value, there’s also a band that plays during portions of the show. This allows Brady to loosely imitate such legends as Tina Turner, Bono, Prince, and even the king himself, Elvis Presley.
As the show progresses, Brady usually ditches his partner and goes at it solo for the wrap-up. This is when Brady’s talent for impressions really shines, and he drops the mocking demeanor and gets serious with James Brown, Luther Vandross and Sammy Davis, Jr. impressions.
It’s hard to say exactly what you’ll see with Wayne’s show, but the man is definitely one of the most talented comedians working today. It’s most likely going to be a good show.
