Top Vegas shows - Drew Carey and The Improv All-Stars
17 March 2010
The Super Bowl is perhaps one of Las Vegas’ busiest times of year. With a city literally built around betting, it’s no surprise that gamblers pour in from far and wide; and the NFL’s biggest game simply provides them a great excuse to make the trek. For nearly a decade now, Drew Carey has taken advantage of the stir and has hosted an improv show.Drew Carey and the Improv All-Stars is a mirror image of the other show Drew used to host with the world’s funniest improvisation comics, Whose Line is it Anyway. Due to legal hassles, Drew and crew cannot use the name, but the Improv All-Stars is basically the exact same show with much of the same cast.
Although Drew and the show roll in around the same time every year, they’re also known to pop up at other times and in other locations. It’s not an ongoing show in Las Vegas, but dates are set frequently enough that anyone wanting to watch it can easily set their Vegas trip schedule for the purpose.
The most recent showing of Drew Carey and the Improv All-Stars took place at the spacious Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand in February 2010. The improv comedy romp opened up to a packed house nearly every night it was running, and every single show was decidedly unpredictable and exciting.
Drew is a busy man these days. Apart from owning part of a professional soccer team and enjoying his time on the golf course, Drew is also the new host of The Price is Right, one of America’s most beloved and longest running daytime game shows. He’s also the face of the Improv All-Stars, as the show’s host, and it revolves around his schedule.
The original cast of Whose Line included Wayne Brady. Wayne is also on the busy side these days; so much so that he’s not appearing in the Improv All-Stars. Brady hosts the daytime hit Let’s Make a Deal and even has his own show in Vegas, Making it Up. The cast would be better with his talents, but they’re not suffering without.
The Improv All-Stars still bring the funny and unpredictable skits with comics like Kathy Kinney, Chip Esten, Greg Proops, Jeff Davis, Jonathan Magnum (who is also a frequent co-host of Wayne’s show), and the John Wayne impersonator extraordinaire, Ryan Stiles.
The Vegas show almost runs in the same format as the old television show. Only in Vegas, there are no censors to add the “bleep” button. However, it’s not a dirty show; some cursing might rear its head, but it’s certainly not enough to offend anyone’s sensibilities.
The type of show you’ll see with Drew Carey and the Improv All-Stars depends on how the cast is melding with one another and the audience. With frequent suggestions being called in by audience members, the cast acts out a wide range of ever-changing scenarios, and the madness ensues.
The price of the show has been going up a tad with each new run in Vegas. It was up to $89 last time, and might be more the next time it appears. Many think it’s a fair price for the show, however, and Drew Carey and the Improv All-Stars is always a welcomed show in Vegas.
