London, England is one of the most famous cities in the world. Its history is as impressive as it is long. Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, London is both the capital of England and the UK, and with its medieval boundaries and core City of London, this metropolis offers something everyone can enjoy. London blends aspects of the Ancient Roman Empire with historic England and meets the modern world head-on.
Although there are literally thousands of things to do in London, a list of ten should get you started.
One: See London!
The London Eye, a giant Ferris wheel, is one of the city's best attractions. With 32 capsules attached to this monster, the Eye gives over 10,000 daily visitors a panoramic view of the city. Visitors to London get a full-scale, 360-degree look at the city.
Two: Visit the River Thames
The River Thames gave birth to London and is one of its most historic attractions. A lot of people choose to walk along its bank and sight see, but taking a cruise will allow you to see and gain easy access to other locations in London, like the Parliament Buildings and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.
Three: St. James' Park
This historic park is where the Queen used to walk and millions of visitors stop in every year. It's the perfect place to enjoy a bit of nature tucked away in this enormous city. And it's close to must-see destination number four, Buckingham Palace.
Four: Buckingham Palace
Although the State Rooms are open to visitors during the Annual Summer Opening of August and September, the Palace is not a year-round or full-access vacation destination. It's still one of the premier sights to see in all of London, but since it is the Queen's official residence, you won't have free reign to wander.
Five: Tower of London
Ever wonder about the Crown Jewels? How about the brutal end many acquaintances of King Henry VIII met? Then the Tower of London is the place you must visit while in the city. Visitors of the Tower can also walk a short distance to see the Tower Bridge Exhibition.
Six: Big Ben
When the clock starts to tick away on your vacation time, visiting Big Ben is a great way to make all of time stand still. Staring up at this imposing clock is a memory that will be etched into your brain forever. The real surprise comes from the clock's bell. Big Ben is actually the name of the gigantic bell that rings out from inside this world wonder.
Seven: St. Paul's Cathedral
Much more than your common church, St. Paul's Cathedral in London is absolutely massive and wholly historic. Visitors can walk up the 530 steps and get a bird's eye view of London, as well as catch a history lesson. Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington's tombs are kept in the cathedral.
Eight: Kensington Palace
Not every location in London is known for being completely historic. Although Kensington Palace is the birthplace of Queen Victoria, it's a must-see location today due to the fact that it was Princess Diana's home. This is one of the most popular destinations in London.
Nine: Globe Theatre
Shakespeare fans love flooding into this theatre. It's an identical recreation of the theatre which Shakespeare made infamous. The play productions are open-air and pay homage to one of the best writers the world has ever known.
Ten: British Museum
To this point, most locations deal strictly in English history. Although it's called the British Museum, this destination is actually about world history. The British Museum is full of various treasures that British soldiers brought back from every corner of the globe. You can find the earliest reported image of Christ, the Rosetta Stone, and a statue from Easter Island at this location.
