The private members only City of London Club was once one of city's oldest clubs. Established in 1832, the establishment was originally known as the London Gentlemen's Club, but later changed its name. The building is located at 19 Broad Street in the City of London, and in order to receive membership in this posh environment, applicants had to be either a partner or director of the club's firm.
It was ultra exclusive. In 1970, the club tried to sell off its large building to be used as office space. The idea was to relocate to a newer and larger premise. The club stayed put after a failed attempt.
Today, the City of London Club doesn't offer private membership to anyone. Those days are long gone. However, the original building on Broad Street remains open and is used as a private hire venue. Private hire means, simply, that the building is available to be rented out for various occasions.
The former City of London Club has become a popular venue for banquets, weddings, conferences, and historic tours. Most of the interior remains the same from the days it was still a prominent gentlemen's club.
The dining hall is open and serves some of the best cuisine in the area. The room is very large as has an open atmosphere. The traditional 18th century window treatments and architecture make the hall a very popular place to be rented.
All areas are open for conferences, but the dining hall is once again the most popular place. The drawing rooms area also popular choices and the gardens on the top floor provide a relaxing contrast to the business dealings of the day.
The City Club goes all out for weddings. Not only is the building large enough to host the actual ceremony and reception, but the staff at City Club go above and beyond, providing the photography, invitations, cake, toast master, and even the flowers. They will even find suitable accommodation for guests.
The ground floor of the club consists of the aforementioned main dining hall, as well as the Salisbury room, a member's bar and regular bar, and the lobby. The first floor of the club is basically a wide-open space. The two large drawing rooms are well-furnished and secluded, and the television room is a smaller area where people watching their sporting matches can do so without outside noise interrupting them.
The second floor is where visitors can find a bit of nature. There's a garden room and a terrace garden, as well as various suites to stay in, like the City Suite, Wellington Room and Masterman Room.
Although the private members aspect of the club is no longer in operation, the City of London Club still remains a popular staple of the area. The bar is always a popular place to gather, and the staff work non-stop to turn out meals and services to people stopping in to use the facility.
