Seeded No1 Caroline Wozniacki: Will She Crack the 2011 Australian Open?

Ranked the world’s top player in women’s tennis, Caroline Wozniacki is obviously keen to keep her title but can she do it?
In the first match of the Australian Open, Wozniacki was thrilled at her triumph over Gisela Dulko after a shaky start to the match. But what about the other players that she will have to face later in the tournament?
Wozniacki critics claim that her No.1 title is false and believe that she won’t last long in the open, but she is showing determination and with Serena Williams out due to injury, perhaps she has a chance to make it through and prevail.
She has been plagued with nasty comments and doubt about her abilities, but she says that she does not care about any of that and will do her best. She recently said “I’ve won six tournaments, and my friends and family are the ones who mean the most to me”.
In spite of her drive, sceptics still believe that Wozniacki is weak and that there is opportunity for an underdog finalist to make it through. Most of the bookmakers aren’t even expecting her to make the semi finals at the moment, but maybe she’ll surprise everybody, since she’s already won her first match of the tournament.
Some sources have said that the Australian Open has come at the perfect time for Wozniacki, as it gives her the opportunity to prove that she is after all worthy of her number one title. But being fair, she is in the number one spot for a reason. Because she played damn good tennis to get there.
It would seem that Wozniacki has a fairly easy path to get to a victory in the finals, with Henin or Schiavone as possibilities in the quarter finals who are both not in full health. It has been speculated that the likely opponent in the semi finals will be the saucy Venus Williams with her raunchy outfits. If that is the case, could this cause a bit of a distraction in a semi finals game? We’ll see.
With all of this media attention around Wozniacki, it’s likely that she under a lot of pressure, even though she claims not to be. Just one slip could have her out in no time at all, and it would seem that although there is a lot of talk over whether she’ll win, the bookie’s odds are not in her favour.
The stronger candidate in the bookmaker’s eyes is Clijsters, who has gone from strength to strength, but she is speaking very calmly about the tournament and says she is taking it one game at a time. Clijsters will be up against Russian player Safina on Tuesday 18th, which is set to be a match and a half.
Either way, whether Wozniacki, Clijsters or another player win the title of the Australian Open, it’s set to be fun and interesting and the tournament is wide open at the moment. It could go any which way at the moment.
