Review of Luxury Gift Royo Painting Sombrilla de Rojo
01 October 2010
Take, for instance, the painting Sombrilla de Rojo by master Spanish painter Royo (not to be confused with Luis Royo - painter of "darker" art pieces). For just under $30,000, you could pick up the luxury gift of a lifetime with this one-of-a-kind painting authenticated by the artist himself.
Sombrilla de Rojo is an original work, oil on canvas, in a beautiful frame standing 46 centimeters tall and 27 centimeters wide. The painting itself is quintessential Royo, featuring a woman in a fall dress with her long hair pinned back in a ponytail. You see the woman's back with her head turned and tilted to the right, seemingly letting her umbrella down as the weather changes.
This painting is very striking for art lovers, featuring shades of pink, blue, yellow, white, red, and green - all brought together beautifully by Royo's masterful stroke. Sombrilla de Rojo stands out as warm and inviting while still coming across as somewhat intriguing and perhaps disturbing.
Although it's hard to see the woman's face, as per Royo's intended positioning, there's an air of depression that comes through in her body language - as if she's saddened by something and in a melancholy state.
Sombrilla translates in English to parasol, and this is essentially just an umbrella. Together, Sombrilla de Rojo translates to Parasol of Red, and some have equated the dropping of this woman's umbrella to a loss of her innocence and the realization that she's forever fodder for the coming storm because of it.
As previously mentioned, art is definitely subjective - and that goes for everything from its value and use to its intended meaning. What's so special about this painting is it's one of the Royo's more unnoticed works and painted at a time while he was transitioning from the blurry landscapes of oils into much crisper and more distinct lines and images.
Royo is no stranger to producing paintings with ambiguous females taking center stage. The beauty of his work is that it's hard to decipher on an emotional level just what these women feel. The worlds they exist in are surreal, and the seasonal changes Royo depicts seem to contradict the sentiment expressed by the painting's star.
Other well noted Royo paintings include: Rosa Y Nacar, Blancos, Sentimiento, Caricia, Genesis, La Joya, Despues del Baile, Calma, Luces y Sombar, and En El Campo, among dozens of other paintings.
