Review of Eurocopter Dauphin AS-365N-3

The Eurocopter AS365 is perhaps the most common model of helicopter in the air today. This mid-weight, multipurpose chopper runs on a twin-engine thats both lightweight and powerful, enabling sustained, fast flight with multiple passengers. The SA and AS class of Eurocopters are used for police and hospital use, news crews, business travel, and much more.

The particular model thats in production today is the Dauphin AS-365N-3. The version of the Eurocopter was developed specifically for hot and high circumstances, as theyre referred to. The 365N 3 is a highly upgraded version of the N 1, which was used throughout most of the 1990s in the same capacity as its successor.

The 365N 3 has Arriel 2C turboshafts that are equipped with fully automated digital electronic control (FADEC). The adoption of this turbine engine is what separates the N 3 and N 3+ series from its predecessors, and both engineers and pilots agree that its a significant improvement over previous models.

The increased power is ideal for warmer weather. All aircraft have to contend with the fact that cool air sinks as hot air rises. This is what creates turbulence while riding in an aircraft; and while airplanes can usually navigate through the turbulence, helicopters, with their unique style of flying, cannot handle well in certain conditions hot climates being one.

Along with the new high altitude fix, the 365N 3 also allows for a greater takeoff capacity. The new engine systems are 18% more powerful than systems found on the N 2 choppers. All told, the 365N 3 can carry 8 or 9 passengers in a standard configuration or 11 to 12 passengers in a high density configuration.

The Eurocopter Dauphin AS-365N-3 also features a new-age 10-blade propeller, allowing for greater speeds and noise reduction. The blade system is made from a lightweight and strong composite material. It also has an anti-torque device with improved asymimmetic blade distribution technology.

Eurocopters Dauphin 365 design is also popular with the military. They use an altered version of the helicopter (F), but, despite a few key upgrades, it is still the same setup and is most popular as the Coast Guards search and rescue model most of us have seen. The helicopter is also popular in an electronic news gathering capacity, collecting vital data.

The Eurocopter Dauphin AS-365N-3 is certainly no slouch in terms of top speeds. It is able to cruise at an impressive speed of 269 kilometers per hour while at full capacity, and it can travel for 792 kilometers (427 nautical miles) fully gassed and at max weight.

The cost per unit for a Dauphin AS-365N-3 is rather steep. Due to the sophisticated equipment, time of construction and the materials used, each one of these choppers cost around $10 million USD.
