Property For Sale - Hans Lollik Islands in The Caribbean

Personal property for sale is certainly nothing new. Expensive cars, lavish homes and luxury jets are bought and sold frequently. However, it’s not very often than an entire island comes up on the market – much less two. Located in the US Virgin Islands, the Hans Lollik Islands are currently for sale by their owners, Bruce Randolph Tizes and Peter R. Morris.
The smaller island is known as Little Hans Lollik. Little Hans isn’t so small, however, and is still a rather large private island of a few hundred acres. Great Hans Lollik Island is the jewel, at around 600 acres. The two sit side-by-side only 8,000 feet removed from St. Thomas.
Located in the Eastern Caribbean, Great Hans Lollik Island and its little sister island are both perfectly suitable for human occupation. In fact, these islands were long inhabited by people of the region and their presence has played a large role in the ecology of the island. During the 1700s, Great Hans was a perfect tropical location to grow cotton.
Due to the winds, climate and the 44 inches of rainfall per year, Great Hans contains rich soil that can sustain a number of various plant life species. However, after over 100 years of farming on the island, most of the topsoil was exposed and washed into the sea. Several feet of topsoil were lost as a result, and for years after the island wasn’t nearly as fertile.
During the 1940s, residents of St. Croix and the Virgin Islands still used Great Hans for an income source, even if cotton was no longer an option for the island. They began hording timber from the island and selling it to nearby more developed islands.
Man’s interference on the island has completely transformed the habitat. Only softwoods grow now that the hardwoods have been taken for timber. Different types of vegetation grow now due to the tampering of the soil. And donkeys and rabbits roam the island – left over from European settlers.
There are no indigenous mammals on Great Hans. The reptilian life resembles that of its neighbor St. Thomas, with a few lizard species. There are also many types of birds on the island, including the brown pelican. However, only rabbits, donkeys and maybe black rats survive as far as mammals go.
The islands are still tropical paradises, however, with white-sand beaches, tall coconut trees, and plenty of marine life around the coast to support occupation in various forms including tourism or sustenance. Bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales are only two of the many species of marine life found around Great Hans.
Great and Little Hans are still very underdeveloped compared to other islands in the region. They would be a large project for any owner. Though, in terms of price, both islands are being offered from around $45 million. This is relatively inexpensive when compared to similar islands in the tropics.
