Gambling Online in the U.S.

Even after the Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), the future of gambling online in the United States is not entirely clear at present. Having tried several times to pass bills that would prevent online players in the U.S. from using online gambling websites legally, legislators finally discovered a way to make it more complicated for citizens in the United States to enjoy real money games online.
Making Online Casino Gambling Illegal in the U.S.
Through the history of gambling online, legislators have tried several times to set up a bill that would ban online casino players in the U.S. from gambling at online casinos for real money. However, the legislator's bills were thrown out in 2000 and 2001. On the other hand, the U.S. government tightened regulations on the online casino industry, which has indeed encouraged online casinos to enhance their services by providing detailed security information for their registered players. Nonetheless, the government were still not happy and so instead of banning gambling online in the U.S. they passed the UIGEA (above) which made it illegal for credit card companies as well as banks to transact with online casinos.
Is Gambling Online in the United States Illegal?
Although the UIGEA made it harder for online gamblers to enjoy the services of online casinos it did not completely stop them. Many online casinos found alternative ways to fund their cash reserves in order to match their competitors across the globe. What is more, the UIGEA is not exactly clear about forbidding U.S. citizens from gambling at online casinos, it actually only makes it illegal for banks to transfer money into online gambling accounts or pay debts to an online casino website.
Additionally, a lot of online casinos challenged the fact that even the UIGEA is not legal as it only makes it difficult for Internet users to use online gaming websites but does not apply the same to sports betting or horseracing gambling websites. It would seem that there are a variety of lawsuits still trying to make their way through the U.S. court system but if the UIGEA is found to be illegal then it will not have any effect on how online players and the online casinos operate in the United States.
On the whole, it looks like the future of online casino gambling in the U.S. is currently unknown, until the court system makes a decision concerning the UIGEA lawsuits. Nevertheless, it is possible that if the bill does not endure the lawsuits then the government is likely to seek another way to help regulate the gambling online industry. Although this might not mean the end of online casinos and gambling online in the States, it could well result in paying tax on the money won through the websites.
