City Review - Saint George's, Grenada

14 August 2010
The Grenadines in the southeastern portion of the Caribbean Sea are perhaps the most beautiful islands in the Northern Atlantic. Grenada is the focal point of the island chain, and is made up of six relatively small islands (much like Hawaii). Grenada is steeped with history and tradition, and the spectacular Caribbean location is a huge draw for tourists.
Saint George’s is the country’s capital city and undoubtedly the most popular of the entire area. Grenada only has a population of around 110,000, and Saint George’s only houses around 8,000 full-time, but millions pass through the streets every year and enjoy the area’s tropical climate, local cuisine and the rich history.
The city’s unique geography originally lent it fame. Grenada, like all these islands, is a volcano that rose from the ocean’s floor and eventually, over many thousands of years, became inhabitable. The volcano on this particular island has collapsed, however, and Saint George’s on Grenada is basically built in and around the crater that was left.
Like all Caribbean countries and territories, tourism eventually started to pick up when airplane travel become more popular in the mid 1900s. People started initially coming to the Caribbean islands for a tropical getaway, but after witnessing the unique architecture and the historic hodgepodge of cultures, the Caribbean lifestyle was what folks were after.
Saint George’s is now a popular tourist destination for people from all walks of life. Famous celebrities venture to the city and rub shoulders with natives and everyday travelers, all of whom are enjoying the culture and, undoubtedly, the tremendous view of the mist-covered mountains from in the ancient volcano crater.
In recent years, the city has been working increasingly hard to attract tourism. It has now become a popular stop along the cruise ship route, and multiple hotels and restaurants have opened up to cater to the many guests. Beaches have also been refurbished in Grenada in general in order to compete with other Caribbean islands.
Saint George’s, however, isn’t the archetype “beach city” of the Caribbean. It’s more of a cultural experience. The French settlers built Saint George’s in the 1600s. A few of the red-roofed houses from the era still stand, but a great fire in 1771 destroyed much of the city.
In the late 1800s, Saint George’s became the replacement capital of the British Windward Islands. Recently, Hurricane Ivan ravaged the city in 2004, and some of the damage can still be seen. Over 90% of the island’s homes were damaged or destroyed, but massive restoration efforts have rebuilt much of the island.
With the help of the European Union, Canada and the United States, Grenada was rebuilt and hosted the Cricket World Cup in 2007.
Among the main tourist attractions in Saint George’s, you have Wharf Road, Fort George, the Grenada National Museum, the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Queen’s Park Stadium Complex, and many various hotels and restaurants.
