Around the Canyons of Hurricane City

Hurricane City in Washington County, Utah is a small city in the western side of the United States. It has a considerably small population of around 10000 persons but the city does maintain a steady growth pattern over the years. The name for the city came about after Erastus Snow, a church official experienced a whirlwind which blew the top off of a buggy that he was in and said: "Well, that was a Hurricane. We'll name this Hurricane Hill.”
The city had a historic Hurricane Canal to direct the water from Virgin River which had once caused flood around the surrounding areas. A lot of effort was put into the project which spanned over 10 years and with the assistance from the neighbouring Virgin and Grafton areas. Amazingly, the long canal was built using only picks and shovels!
The canal has since been preserved and maintained by the locals since 2000. Visitors can visit the historic site and take a stroll along its steep slopes and many have commented that the steep slope has the effect of making the canal to seem floating in the air. The lime kiln and sandstone kiln to make the cement for the canal can be seen at the side of the narrow canal.
More history about Hurricane City can be acquired from the Heritage Park and Museum. You can learn about the early settlement that led to Hurricane City and also enjoy the various sculptures and monuments placed in the museum. Visitors can always ask the locals about the city as most of them are descendants of the farmers who helped to build the canal and they are too, very familiar with the background of the city.
For those who look for some adventurous thrill can check out the Mountain Bike Trails by J.E.M. Trail; the name derived from initials of the founders. There are three types of biking tracks to choose from; single track, double track and dirt road track. The challenging tracks usually take about 2-3 hours to finish and the technical difficulty has been classed as moderate.
Hurricane City also has a place for visitors to relax and unwind at the Pah Tempe Mineral Hot Springs. Pah Tempe means healing water and the name was given by the early tribes living in the Virgin River canyon area. Besides soaking in the outdoor hot bath, visitors can also make full use of the retreat centre plus the bed and breakfast service which are also offered here.
The Snow Canyon State Park is of close proximity with Hurricane City and this is a popular campsite for many. Two separate canyons surrounded the area; namely the West Canyon and Snow Canyon and both ends meet at the middle of the state park and the adjacent Red Mountain also adds a hint of beauty to the place. If you happen to pass by the state park via Route 18 in the morning be sure to take a view at the state park from afar for you will be immersed in its beauty.
