A review of Zumanity, Cirque du Soliel's other side

05 January 2009

A review of Zumanity, Cirque du Soliel's other sideWho knew that Cirque du Soleil had a sensual side? If you’ve ever watched a Cirque production like “O” then you’re well aware of the high-flying, insanely precise, entertaining brand of acrobatics that only Cirque can bring you. For audiences of Cirque’s newest show playing at the New York, New York hotel and casino, Zumanity may be too much for your senses.

It’s a racy and sometimes raunchy adults-only show that explores human sexuality for over 2 hours. The performers are gorgeous and just as talented as you’d expect any Cirque du Soleil performer to be. And just like you’d imagine a dirty Vegas show – yeah, it’s that provocative.

As soon as the curtain lifts, you get a full idea of why this show is labeled “adults only”. This tribute to human sexual expression pays homage to Las Vegas’ nickname of “Sin City,” and does so extremely well. But while some acts in the show are worthy of the Cirque name, others have a tendency to appear amateurish and seem like they’d be seen in strip clubs or cheesy bars.

Zumanity also has a cute and funny side to it, bringing in a whiff of comedy and playful expression. But be warned, if you’re not comfortable with homosexuality, i.e. man-on-man smooch-fests, then you may want to skip this one all together. Some unsuspecting audience members have promptly left the premises.

However, the show is far from revolting. In fact, it’s extremely entertaining if you don’t might sitting through a scene or two that may not necessarily be up your alley. Zumanity has a bit of variety to it as far as the themes throughout the show. But with the acrobatics and other “stunts,” they could definitely push harder to make it more worth the price of admission. Towards the end of the show, the audience interaction seems to be a little forced. Members from the performing troupe come off stage and grab audience members and lead them to participation.

Zumanity isn’t a bad show by any stretch. It is, however, aimed at a particular audience, so it’s not exactly considered “mainstream”. It has a little bit of everything, though, including action, comedy, acrobatics, sketches, and, of course, plenty of sexual situations. The theater is also very nice and you’re never cramped in, elbow-to-elbow, even if it’s filled to capacity.

The ticket prices for Zumanity are relatively inexpensive for Las Vegas. You can grab a good seat on a cabaret stool or in the balcony for around $70. If you want to be seated in the upper orchestra, you’ll pay around $80. For regular orchestra seats, it’s right at $100. Ordering online will most likely get you a deal if you’re looking to stay in the hotel as well.
