A little history on Ayrton Senna the great formula one driverAyrton Senna Da Silva was born on March 21, 1960 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Senna lived in Monte Carlo and Sao Paula is his latter years, and was divorced from his wife but was involved in a relationship. He had no children of his own, having chosen to make racing his life, hoping to save family for a later date when the wheels stopped rolling.

Senna started racing go-karts at the age of 4, and his first run in a real racecar came at the age of 21 in a Formula Ford 1600 van Diemen. In 1981, he became the British Formula Ford 1600 Champion. In 82, he repeated as British Champion, and also won the European title in the Formula Ford 2000 class. And in 83, he won the British F3 Championship.

When 1984 rolled around, Senna found himself with Toleman-Hart and was driving a F1 car. He never won a race that year and had a bad accident when he crashed during practice. When the season finished, Senna was ranked 8th with 13 points. The 1985 season brought much-needed improvements. Senna led in races at Imola, Monaco, Nurburgring, Detroit, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, and Adelaide. He finished the 85 season in 4th place with 38 points. In 1986, Senna won his first 2 F1 races and won pole position 8 times.

Detroit was the scene was Senna’s full driving capabilities in 1987. He stunned the racing world with his elegant yet aggressive performance. As the trend was proving, Senna inched closer to his first F1 title by earning a combined 57 points and finishing 3rd overall.

Almost doubling his points in 1998, Senna won his first F1 title with a total of 94 points. A few mechanical errors snuffed out Senna’s chances to repeat in 1988, though he did manage to place 2nd overall. This is the same year of the famous clash with Nigel Mansell. During a race in Estoril, Portugal, they crashed into each other, both being knocked out of the race.

With a total of 78 points in 1990, Senna was once again champion of the F1 series. In 1991, Senna won the world championship for the last time of his career. Though Nelson Piquet won the year’s first 4 races, Senna would soon narrow the gap and ultimately take the lead and refuse to relinquish it. In 1992, Senna once again finished in the top 5 in overall points. His McLaren MP/6 propelled him to a 4th place finish. 1993 Was Senna’s last full season on the Formula One circuit. He earned runner-up in the world championship. By this time, Senna was earning 1 million dollars per race, on a race-by-race basis.

Senna joined teammate Mika Hakkinen at Williams in 1994. He won pole position in Brazil, Pacific, and the San Marino Grand Prix. During the race in San Marino, Senna crashed and was killed in a horrific accident. At only 34 years of age, one of the world’s great drivers was tragically taken away. Senna participated in 161 races, won 41; earned pole position 65 times, accumulated 614 points, and visited 80 podiums.
